Christians In The Olympics

  • Posted on February 26, 2010 at 2:41 pm

Nowadays, we’re all hearing a lot about the Winter Olympics. It’s encouraging to see these talented athletes get gold medals, break records and make Olympics history.

And, it should inspire all of us when you hear the stories behind the hard work, determination and dedication these athletes display. Although we learn a lot about these athletes; their hometown, their families, their age, their height and even their weight, there’s one thing that seems to be lacking. Rarely, do we hear about their faith and the anchor that held them together during their obstacles and gave them to strength to be amazing.

Take time to listen to these stories and hear about the one thing that’s missing in the athletes story, their Faith in God—-Chad Hedrick’s Stating and Faith, Kelly Clark’s Snowboarding and Christ and Erin Pac’s Bobsleding and Her Faith.

Now think about it, if God can do miraculous things in their, then imagine what he can do in our lives.

As you enjoy your candy, cards, gifts and your special someone in your life, just remember the greatest love of all…”For God loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish , but have everlasting life” (John 3:16 KJV).

I Took Your Place

  • Posted on February 12, 2010 at 4:39 pm

One day, a man went to visit a church. He got there early, parked his car and got out. Another car pulled up near the driver got out and said, ‘I always park there! You took my place!’ The visitor went inside for Sunday school, found an empty seat and sat down. A young lady from the church approached him and stated, ‘That’s my seat! You took my place!’ The visitor was somewhat distressed by this rude welcome, but said nothing.

After Sunday school, the visitor went into the sanctuary and sat down. Another member walked up to him and said, ‘That’s where I always sit! You took my place!’ The visitor was even more troubled by this treatment, but still He said nothing. Later as the congregation was praying for Christ to dwell among them, the visitor stood up, and his appearance began to change. Horrible scars became visible on his hands and on his sandaled feet. Someone from the congregation noticed him and called out, ‘What happened to you?’

The visitor replied, as his hat became a crown of thorns, and a tear fell from his eye, ‘I took your place.’

Make A Difference In Someone’s Life Today

  • Posted on February 7, 2010 at 8:03 pm

As Jean Thompson stood in front of her 5th grade class on the very first day of school, she told the children an untruth. Like most teachers, she looked at her students and said that she loved them all the same. However, that was impossible, because there in the front row, slumped in his seat, was a little boy named Teddy Stoddard.

Mrs. Thompson had watched Teddy the year before and noticed that he did not play well with the other children, that his clothes were messy and that he constantly needed a bath. In addition, Teddy could be unpleasant. It got to the point where Mrs. Thompson would actually take delight in marking his papers with a broad red pen, making bold X’s and then putting a big ‘F’ at the top of his papers .

At the school where Mrs. Thompson taught, she was required to review each child’s past records and she put Teddy’s off until last. However, when she reviewed his file, she was in for a surprise.

Teddy’s first grade teacher wrote, ‘Teddy is a bright child with a ready laugh. He does his work neatly and has good manners… he is a joy to be around.’

His second grade teacher wrote, ‘Teddy is an excellent student, well liked by his classmates, but he is troubled because his mother has a terminal illness and life at home must be a struggle.’

His third grade teacher wrote, ‘His mother’s death has been hard on him. He tries to do his best, but his father doesn’t show much interest, and his home life will soon affect him if some steps aren’t taken.’

Teddy’s fourth grade teacher wrote, ‘Teddy is withdrawn and doesn’t show much interest in school. He doesn’t have many friends and he sometimes sleeps in class.’

By now, Mrs. Thompson realized the problem and she was ashamed of herself. She felt even worse when her students brought her Christmas presents, wrapped in beautiful ribbons and bright paper, except for Teddy’s. His present was clumsily wrapped in the heavy, brown paper that he got from a grocery bag. Mrs. Thompson took pains to open it in the middle of the other presents. Some of the children started to laugh when she found a rhinestone bracelet with some of the stones missing, and a bottle that was one-quarter full of perfume.. But she stifled the children’s laughter when she exclaimed how pretty the bracelet was, putting it on, and dabbing some of the perfume on her wrist. Teddy Stoddard stayed after school that day just long enough to say, ‘Mrs. Thompson, today you smelled just like my Mom used to.’

After the children left, she cried for at least an hour. On that very day, she quit teaching reading, writing and arithmetic. Instead, she began to teach children. Mrs. Thompson paid particular attention to Teddy. As she worked with him, his mind seemed to come alive. The more she encouraged him, the faster he responded. By the end of the year, Teddy had become one of the smartest children in the class and, despite her lie that she would love all the children the same, Teddy became one of her ‘teacher’s pets.’

A year later, she found a note under her door, from Teddy, telling her that she was the best teacher he ever had in his whole life.

Six years went by before she got another note from Teddy. He then wrote that he had finished high school, third in his class, and she was still the best teacher he ever had in life.

Four years after that, she got another letter, saying that while things had been tough at times, he’d stayed in school, had stuck with it, and would soon graduate from college with the highest of honors. He assured Mrs. Thompson that she was still the best and favorite teacher he had ever had in his whole life.

Then four more years passed and yet another letter came. This time he explained that after he got his bachelor’s degree, he decided to go a little further. The letter explained that she was still the best and favorite teacher he ever had. But now his name was a little longer…. The letter was signed, Theodore F. Stoddard, MD.

The story does not end there. You see, there was yet another letter that spring. Teddy said he had met this girl and was going to be married. He explained that his father had died a couple of years ago and he was wondering if Mrs. Thompson might agree to sit at the wedding in the place that was usually reserved fo r the mother of the groom. Of course, Mrs. Thompson did. And guess what? She wore that bracelet, the one with several rhinestones missing. Moreover, she made sure she was wearing the perfume that Teddy remembered his mother wearing on their last Christmas together.

They hugged each other, and Dr. Stoddard whispered in Mrs. Thompson’s ear, ‘Thank you Mrs. Thompson for believing in me. Thank you so much for making me feel important and showing me that I could make a difference.’

Mrs. Thompson, with tears in her eyes, whispered back.. She said, ‘Teddy, you have it all wrong. You were the one who taught me that I could make a difference. I didn’t know how to teach until I met you.’

(For you that don’t know, Teddy Stoddard is the Dr at Iowa Methodist in Des Moines that has the Stoddard Cancer Wing.)

Warm someone’s heart today and share this story. It is sure to cause them to shed a tear or two.   Try to make a difference in someone’s life today? Tomorrow?  JUST DO IT”   Random acts of kindness.

P.U.S.H: Pray Until Something Happens

  • Posted on February 5, 2010 at 12:10 pm

It is sometimes discouraging when we do something that the Lord lays on
our heart and yet when we do that thing, we feel that is it all in vain
and no results are coming forth.  Remember that God’s ways are not our
ways and He does give us trials, not so that we will fail but to make our
faith in Him and ourselves stronger.  God is faithful to give us the
strength we need to overcome every trial and tribulation when we seek Him
in prayer and ask for it (Jeremiah 33:3).  Remember, Prayer is the
essential thing to getting answers from the Lord.

I hope this story ministers to your heart.

P.U.S.H

A man was sleeping at night in his cabin when suddenly his room filled
with light, and the Savior appeared.

The Lord told the man he had work for him to do, and showed him a large
rock in front of his cabin.  The Lord explained that the man was to push
against the rock with all his might. So this the man did; day after day.

For many years he toiled from sun up to sun down; his shoulders set
squarely against the cold, massive surface of the unmoving rock, pushing
with all his might. Each night the man returned to his cabin sore and worn
out, feeling that his whole day had been spent in vain.

Since the man was showing signs of discouragement, the Adversary decided
to enter the picture by placing thoughts into the man’s weary mind: “You
have been pushing against that rock for a long time, and it hasn’t
budged.  Why kill yourself over this?  You are never going to move it.”
Thus, giving the man the impression that the task was impossible and that
he was a failure.

These thoughts discouraged and disheartened the man.  “Why kill myself
over this?” he thought.  “I’ll just put in my time, giving just the
minimum effort; and that will be good enough.” And that is what he planned
to do, until one day he decided to make it a matter of prayer and take his
troubled thoughts to the Lord.

“Lord,” he said, “I have labored long and hard in your service, putting
all my strength to do that which you have asked. Yet, after all this time,
I have not even budged that rock by half a millimeter.  What is wrong? Why
am I failing?”

The Lord responded compassionately,  “My son, when I asked you to serve me
and you accepted, I told you that your task was to push against the rock
with all your strength; which you have done.

Never once did I mention to you that I expected you to move it.  Your task
was to push. And now you come to me with your strength spent, thinking
that you have failed.  But is that really so?

Look at yourself…Your arms are strong and muscled, your back sinewy and
brown, your hands are calloused from constant pressure, and your legs have
become massive and hard.

Through opposition you have grown much, and your abilities now surpass
that which you used to have.  Yet you haven’t moved the rock. But your
calling was to be obedient and to push and to exercise your faith and
trust in My wisdom. This you have done.  Now I, my son, will move the
rock.”

At times when we hear a word from God, we tend to use our own intellect to
decipher what He wants, when actually what God wants is just simple
obedience and faith in Him.

Even though in the short term we do not see how our works are affecting
God’s kingdom, He will show us in His own way that every area in serving
God makes us stronger and in this obedience God will promote us into a
higher ministry and this cycle will continue itself; if we faint not and
continue on the path the Lord has set us upon.(Read 2 Corinthians 4:16-17)

P.U.S.H – Pray Until Something Happens!

Read and meditate on these scriptures:

Proverbs 3:5-6 “Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto
thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall
direct thy paths.”

Isaiah 58:13-14 “If thou turn away thy foot from the sabbath, from doing
thy pleasure on my holy day; and call the sabbath a delight, the holy of
the LORD, honourable; and shalt honour him, not doing thine own ways, nor
finding thine own pleasure, nor speaking thine own words: Then shalt thou
delight thyself in the LORD; and I will cause thee to ride upon the high
places of the earth, and feed thee with the heritage of Jacob thy father:
for the mouth of the LORD hath spoken it.”

1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 “Rejoice evermore. Pray without ceasing. In every
thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning
you.”

Psalm 121:1-4 “I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills, from whence cometh
my help.  My help cometh from the LORD, which made heaven and earth. He
will not suffer thy foot to be moved: he that keepeth thee will not
slumber. Behold, he that keepeth Israel shall neither slumber nor sleep.”
